๐ Single Bean Spotlight - Demonic Scythe Reawakened
Next week is Halloween ๐, and regular readers know I have a weakness for scythes - if the Harken Scythe spotlight a while back didn't make that obvious enough.
(010) Espresso Shot
The next issue of your weekly, coffee-flavored newsletter spotlighting Minecraft 1.12 mods, makers, and community news.
Turns out 1.12 has more blades where that came from. So before the spooky season closes, here's one last harvest-themed pick I stumbled across while browsing: Demonic Scythe Reawakened - a fork of the original Demonic Scythe by omicrondev, polished up by ProvidenceDaemon, with textures once again by . The man's hand is everywhere.
The premise is brutal but simple. Hold the scythe and suffer the Corruption debuff, watching your max health drain bite by bite. Right-click and swing through every entity in a three-block radius. The Awakened variant corrupts you faster but heals you on hit, turning each fight into a gamble. Less safe farming, more calculated risk.
The fork smooths out the edges. Both scythes now use Minecraft's built-in cooldown system, so you can actually see your AOE timing, and the spin attack announces itself with a sound. The Corruption effect finally wears an icon - courtesy of Foreck - and it no longer drags you down to zero max health, which stops odd interactions with other mods, notably Respawn Timer. Damage and the minimum health floor are configurable, so pack makers can dial the danger without breaking the overall balance.
And can we talk about those textures for a second? This is a simple mod, but Foreck's art makes it look like it wandered in from a proper dark fantasy title. Every time I look at the item sprite I get the urge to boot up Darksiders 2 and roleplay as Death all over again. Which raises a genuinely dangerous question:
Is somebody out there quietly building a modpack that captures that game's combat loop? Because if it exists and I find out about it, that's another few hundred hours gone - and these newsletters are already late enough as it is. ๐

Tl;dr: Two scythes, one debuff, and the constant temptation to push your luck one swing further. Fits packs chasing that high-risk dark fantasy vibe where power always demands something in return.
๐ Barista's Special - Where Does the Knowledge Live?
There's a question that keeps nagging at me every time it comes to documentation: where does the information go?
Discord isn't the answer. We've danced around this before1 - search is broken, history vanishes if a server gets nuked, and the knowledge is locked behind walls you can't link to. It works great for quick shots - instant, hot, and gone cold within minutes. Terrible for anything that needs to stick around after the conversation dies down.
So the default becomes a wiki. But hosting one means maintenance, and most pack authors are already stretched thin balancing everything else. Then there's scale: a wiki makes sense for packs with ten thousand players.2 For something that'll see a few hundred installs - which sadly is most of us - the overhead doesn't justify it. And yet those same packs end up with mechanics intricate enough that new players need a guide just to follow progression.
In-game books solve part of it. They're like keeping your grounds fresh - present at the exact moment of need, and tools like Patchouli have been the standard for a reason. I've even built a small add-on myself3 because the gaps mattered enough to fill them. But those guides are trapped in the client, invisible to anyone outside the game, and useless when you're planning your next session on your phone.
The broader question is the one nobody's solving cleanly. If Minecraft becomes more like an engine for bespoke experiences - I mean packs that redefine the game loop, progression spanning dozens of mods, mechanics that demand tutorials - where does the supporting documentation live in an open, portable, search-friendly way?
It's the sort of thing worth talking about more, especially since the alternative is building systems that only work if you're already used to them. I don't have a clean answer here, and I'm not convinced one exists yet. If you've wrestled with this in your own projects, I'd like to hear it - push back, tell me where I'm wrong, or share what actually worked for you.
On that note, there's a longer piece brewing for the blog: a proper look at the in-game documentation options available today, why I landed on Patchouli as the best of them (which is why I ended up writing an add-on for it), where it still falls short, and what my ideal setup would look like. No ETA - I've learned to stop promising deadlines after the last one:
My Modpack Paradox
Why "Just write a mod for it." has been stuck in my head since I picked up modding and why it makes me unable to publish new modpacks.

ModDex API Goes Public - And V2 at That
Big news from the team - their API is now fully public, no account or token required. And it's not just an endpoint dump, v2 covers almost everything you can do on the site.
You can look up projects by CurseForge, Modrinth, or ModDex IDs (batch up to 100 at once), match files from hashes, search with every filter the website offers, pull reviews and user profiles. Worth checking out if you're building something that needs to talk to ModDex without crawling HTML. โจ
Our API is now fully public, no token or account needed! API v2 was also released today, you can get all Minecraft projects and their details, files, dependencies, reviews, similar projects, and more! Thanks Enderman :3

Yet another biome mod?!
We've talked about new biome mods before4, but ACGaming's bringing back another classic with a twist: Extra Biome Travels. Unlike the heavy custom-content approaches some take, this one leans into simplicity and vanilla-style integration. It implements biomes from Traverse and ExtrabiomesXL with especially the latter being an all time classic.
